Methanol

methyl alcohol

What a safety data sheet for methanol and mixtures containing it has to cover – harmonised classification, workplace limits and transport, taken from official sources.

Sources last checked: 14 October 2026 · CLP consolidated version of 1 July 2026 Author: Maximilián Pálffy, chemical engineer This page is not a safety data sheet. We do not publish SDSs of specific products – the figures come from official sources and the binding text is always the legislation itself.

Harmonised classification

Entry in CLP Annex VI, Table 3: methanol.

Annex VI, Table 3

Classification

  • Flam. Liq. 2 – flammable liquids, category 2 (H225)
  • Acute Tox. 3 – acute toxicity, category 3 (H331, H311, H301)
  • STOT SE 1 – specific target organ toxicity – single exposure, category 1 (H370)
Label elements

Labelling

GHS02 pictogram – flame GHS06 pictogram – skull and crossbones GHS08 pictogram – health hazard
Signal word: Danger · GHS02, GHS06, GHS08
  • H225 Highly flammable liquid and vapour.
  • H331 Toxic if inhaled.
  • H311 Toxic in contact with skin.
  • H301 Toxic if swallowed.
  • H370 Causes damage to organs.
  • Acute Tox. 3 (inhalation, dermal, oral) is a minimum classification (marked * in Annex VI): if data justify a more severe category, it must be used.
  • Specific concentration limits: STOT SE 1 (H370) at C ≥ 10 %; STOT SE 2 (H371) at 3 % ≤ C < 10 %.

Workplace limits and transport

Occupational exposure limits are national. The values below are those of Slovakia; an SDS states the limits of the country where it is supplied, together with their legal basis.

Government Regulation No 355/2006

Occupational exposure limits (Slovakia)

  • 8-hour limit: 200 ppm / 260 mg/m³
  • Note “K”: readily absorbed through the skin
ADR 2025

Transport

  • UN 1230 methanol – class 3, packing group II
  • Labels 3 and 6.1 (subsidiary toxic hazard)

What the SDS must cover

All safety data sheets follow the 16 sections of REACH Annex II. For methanol, these points need particular attention:

Section 2 H225, H301, H311, H331 and H370 with pictograms GHS02, GHS06 and GHS08.
Section 3 For a mixture: the specific concentration limits – from 3 % methanol the mixture is classified for organ damage (STOT SE 2, H371), from 10 % STOT SE 1 (H370).
Section 8 Occupational exposure limit with the skin notation – in Slovakia 200 ppm, note K – and skin protection.
Section 14 UN 1230, class 3 with subsidiary hazard 6.1, packing group II.
Section 15 REACH Annex XVII, entry 69: windscreen washing or defrosting fluids with 0.6 % or more methanol must not be placed on the market for the general public.
The structure of all 16 sections is described in the SDS template.
