Toluene

methylbenzene

What a safety data sheet for toluene and mixtures containing it has to cover – harmonised classification, workplace limits and transport, taken from official sources.

Sources last checked: 14 October 2026 · CLP consolidated version of 1 July 2026 Author: Maximilián Pálffy, chemical engineer This page is not a safety data sheet. We do not publish SDSs of specific products – the figures come from official sources and the binding text is always the legislation itself.

Labelling

GHS02 pictogram – flame GHS08 pictogram – health hazard GHS07 pictogram – exclamation mark
Signal word: Danger · GHS02, GHS08, GHS07
  • H225 Highly flammable liquid and vapour.
  • H361d Suspected of damaging the unborn child.
  • H304 May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways.
  • H373 May cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure.
  • H315 Causes skin irritation.
  • H336 May cause drowsiness or dizziness.
  • STOT RE 2 is a minimum classification (*). For H373 the route of exposure is not stated because it cannot be excluded (**).

Workplace limits and transport

Occupational exposure limits are national. The values below are those of Slovakia; an SDS states the limits of the country where it is supplied, together with their legal basis.

Government Regulation No 355/2006

Occupational exposure limits (Slovakia)

  • 8-hour limit: 50 ppm / 192 mg/m³
  • Short-term limit: 100 ppm / 384 mg/m³
  • Note “K”: readily absorbed through the skin
ADR 2025

Transport

  • UN 1294 toluene – class 3, packing group II
  • Label 3

What the SDS must cover

All safety data sheets follow the 16 sections of REACH Annex II. For toluene, these points need particular attention:

Section 2 Six hazard classes with H225, H361d, H304, H373, H315, H336 and pictograms GHS02, GHS08 and GHS07.
Section 8 Limits with the skin notation – in Slovakia 50 ppm (8 hours) and 100 ppm (short-term), note K.
Section 11 Information on reproductive toxicity and effects after repeated exposure.
Section 14 UN 1294, class 3, packing group II.
Section 15 REACH Annex XVII, entry 48: adhesives and spray paints for the general public must not contain 0.1 % or more toluene.
The structure of all 16 sections is described in the SDS template.
