Isopropanol

propan-2-ol, isopropyl alcohol

What a safety data sheet for isopropanol and mixtures containing it has to cover – harmonised classification, workplace limits and transport, taken from official sources.

Sources last checked: 14 October 2026 · CLP consolidated version of 1 July 2026 Author: Maximilián Pálffy, chemical engineer This page is not a safety data sheet. We do not publish SDSs of specific products – the figures come from official sources and the binding text is always the legislation itself.

Harmonised classification

Entry in CLP Annex VI, Table 3: propan-2-ol; isopropyl alcohol; isopropanol.

Annex VI, Table 3

Classification

  • Flam. Liq. 2 – flammable liquids, category 2 (H225)
  • Eye Irrit. 2 – eye irritation, category 2 (H319)
  • STOT SE 3 – specific target organ toxicity – single exposure, category 3 (H336)
Label elements

Labelling

GHS02 pictogram – flame GHS07 pictogram – exclamation mark
Signal word: Danger · GHS02, GHS07
  • H225 Highly flammable liquid and vapour.
  • H319 Causes serious eye irritation.
  • H336 May cause drowsiness or dizziness.
  • The harmonised entry has no specific concentration limits – mixtures are classified with the generic limits of CLP Annex I.

Workplace limits and transport

Occupational exposure limits are national. The values below are those of Slovakia; an SDS states the limits of the country where it is supplied, together with their legal basis.

Government Regulation No 355/2006

Occupational exposure limits (Slovakia)

  • 8-hour limit: 200 ppm / 500 mg/m³
  • Short-term limit: 400 ppm / 1,000 mg/m³
ADR 2025

Transport

  • UN 1219 isopropanol – class 3, packing group II
  • Label 3

What the SDS must cover

All safety data sheets follow the 16 sections of REACH Annex II. For isopropanol, these points need particular attention:

Section 2 Flam. Liq. 2, Eye Irrit. 2 and STOT SE 3 with H225, H319, H336, pictograms GHS02 and GHS07 and the signal word “Danger”.
Section 8 National occupational exposure limits – in Slovakia 200 ppm (8 hours) and 400 ppm (short-term).
Section 9 Flash point, boiling point and explosion limits – the data the flammability classification rests on.
Section 14 UN 1219, class 3, packing group II.
Section 15 Hand and surface disinfectants are also biocidal products – see biocidal products.
The structure of all 16 sections is described in the SDS template.
