Sodium hypochlorite

bleach solution

What a safety data sheet for sodium hypochlorite and mixtures containing it has to cover – harmonised classification, workplace limits and transport, taken from official sources.

Sources last checked: 14 October 2026 · CLP consolidated version of 1 July 2026 Author: Maximilián Pálffy, chemical engineer This page is not a safety data sheet. We do not publish SDSs of specific products – the figures come from official sources and the binding text is always the legislation itself.

Harmonised classification

Entry in CLP Annex VI, Table 3: sodium hypochlorite, solution … % Cl active.

Annex VI, Table 3

Classification

  • Skin Corr. 1B – skin corrosion, category 1B (H314)
  • Eye Dam. 1 – serious eye damage, category 1 (H318)
  • Aquatic Acute 1 – hazardous to the aquatic environment – acute, category 1 (H400)
  • Aquatic Chronic 1 – hazardous to the aquatic environment – chronic, category 1 (H410)
Label elements

Labelling

GHS05 pictogram – corrosion GHS09 pictogram – environment
Signal word: Danger · GHS05, GHS09
  • H314 Causes severe skin burns and eye damage.
  • H410 Very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects.
  • EUH031 Contact with acids liberates toxic gas.
  • M-factors: M = 10 (acute aquatic) and M = 1 (chronic aquatic). EUH031 applies at C ≥ 5 %.
  • Note B: the solution is placed on the market at various concentrations, so the label must state the percentage concentration.

Workplace limits and transport

Occupational exposure limits are national. The values below are those of Slovakia; an SDS states the limits of the country where it is supplied, together with their legal basis.

Government Regulation No 355/2006

Occupational exposure limits (Slovakia)

  • No limit is set for sodium hypochlorite
  • Chlorine, which can be released (EUH031): short-term limit 0.5 ppm / 1.5 mg/m³
ADR 2025

Transport

  • UN 1791 hypochlorite solution – class 8
  • Packing group II (corrosive) or III (slightly corrosive)
  • Label 8 and the environmentally hazardous substance mark

What the SDS must cover

All safety data sheets follow the 16 sections of REACH Annex II. For sodium hypochlorite, these points need particular attention:

Section 2 H314 and H410 with pictograms GHS05 and GHS09, EUH031 at C ≥ 5 % and the concentration of active chlorine (Note B).
Section 3 For a mixture: the concentration and the M-factors, which have a strong effect on the aquatic classification of the mixture.
Section 10 Incompatibility with acids – contact releases toxic chlorine.
Section 14 UN 1791, class 8, packing group II or III and the environmental hazard.
Section 15 If the product is sold as a disinfectant, it is also a biocidal product – see biocidal products.
The structure of all 16 sections is described in the SDS template.
